Hydra-Spetses by Design -
The Saronic Islands
|
Hydra
Hydra bustles with fishing boats, ferries and yachts, backed by a steep
amphitheater of whitewashed houses with
colorful
doors and walls hung with bougainvillea and hibiscus. Tavernas do a brisk
business as locals and visitors gather for
waterfront
breakfasts or dinners under soft harbor lights. Shops are full of handmade
lace dresses and woolen shawls.

Spetses
Spetes is a particular favorite of Athenian families and European travelers who
delight in the island’s beaches and the informality of island life, as well as
waterside restaurants around the small harbor of Spetses Town. By horse-drawn
carriage or on foot, visitors can travel a mile to the old harbor and hike up
the hill past lovely old ship owners’ mansions to the 17th-century monastery
of Agios Nikolaos. Leaving town and heading west, you’ll find the Vrellou, the
first of many fine beaches, and further on is scenic Zogeria. To the south is
the finest beach in the Saronic islands, Agia Anargiri. The interesting looking
islet to the east of Spetses is privately owned by shipping tycoon Stavros
Niarchos.
